Helicobacter Pylori

Discovered in 1983 by Marshall and Warren, H. pylori can cause chronic gastritis and there is an association between H. pylori infections and peptic ulcers. Recently, H. pylori has also been identified as a risk factor for gastric cancers. H. pylori elicits a specific serological response in the infected person and detection of antibodies to H. pylori in the patient’s serum is a reliable indicator of H. pylori infection.
