Bilirubin Synermed
Bilirubin is a product of haemoglobin catabolism. Poorly soluble in water, bilirubin is carried to the liver bound to albumin. Bilirubin is made water-soluble in the liver by conjugation with glucuronic acid to form mono and mainly diglucuronides. Conjugated bilirubin is excreted into the bile duct and then to the gall bladder. Total bilirubin concentration increases in cases of acute pre-hepatic, hepatic or post-hepatic icterus. In healthy patients, conjugated bilirubin is practically non detectable. In case of hepatic or post-hepatic cholestasis, bilirubin glucoronides accumulate and flow back into the blood where they can be titrated.
